Reach the base through the national network, then confirm the final local connection. Long-distance trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue) in the north of Bangkok, not the old Hua Lamphong station, since 2023. Bangkok–Chiang Mai: 11–13 h; the overnight Special Express (trains 9/10) has second-class air-con bunks for about €25 and first-class two-berth cabins for about €38. Bangkok–Surat Thani for Samui/Phangan/Tao: overnight, 9–11 h, about €25 in a bunk. Bangkok–Ayutthaya: 1.5–2 h, €1–2; Bangkok–Hua Hin: 3.5–4 h; Kanchanaburi: two slow trains a day from Thonburi station, 2.5–3 h, so most people take the minivan out and ride the river stretch to Nam Tok locally. A direct sleeper to Vientiane in Laos has run since July 2024. Book on SRT's D-Ticket site or via 12Go; sleepers sell out two to three weeks ahead in high season, lower berths first.

Ayutthaya & Sukhothai: what to expect

Ayutthaya is 90 minutes from Bangkok by train and a day on a bicycle among 14th-century ruins and headless Buddhas. Sukhothai, 400 km north and older, is quieter and more beautiful, best at dawn on a rented bike and a natural stop between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Do both if you have the time; do Sukhothai if you have to choose. This travel base guide groups the destination into six useful areas so the stay works on the ground, not only on a country map.

Travellers with 1 day and 2 days

That window gives Ayutthaya & Sukhothai enough room for one anchor area and one contrasting cluster per day.

Cycling and sunset

Ayutthaya outer temples and Bang Pa-In make that interest practical rather than a country-level promise.

Area-led planners

Six fixed clusters make it easier to choose a base and avoid repeated cross-destination transfers.

Maybe not for you: A compressed checklist is the weak version of Ayutthaya & Sukhothai. Treat the suggested stay as time on the ground: weather, timed entry, ferries or mountain roads can remove half a day.

Season by season

When to visit Ayutthaya & Sukhothai

December–April, adjusted for the coast. Rounded tropical-seasonal planning normals: warm year-round with a clear dry and green-season rhythm. Conditions can still change sharply by elevation, coast and exposure, so use the chart for route timing and the current forecast for the day itself.

  1. Dry season

    December–April

    Best

Reliable mornings and easier roads, with peak prices and dust in exposed areas.

  2. Early green

    May–July

    Good

Lush landscapes and afternoon rain often make a strong value window.

  3. Wet peak

    August–October

    Mixed

  4. Transition

    November

    Good

Rain eases unevenly before high season fully returns.

Local tips for Ayutthaya & Sukhothai

Plan the transfer, not only the distance

Treat the suggested stay as time on the ground: weather, timed entry, ferries or mountain roads can remove half a day.

01

Visa and the arrival card

EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens get 60 days visa-free (raised from 30 in July 2024; the government has repeatedly floated cutting it back to 30 — check before booking a stay longer than a month). Extendable once by 30 days at an immigration office for about €50. Everyone must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before landing; airlines may also ask for proof of onward travel.

02

Money

Baht, roughly ฿38 to the euro. Cash still runs street food, markets, songthaews and small guesthouses; cards work in hotels, malls, chains and most restaurants with a printed menu. Every foreign-card ATM withdrawal costs ฿220 (about €6) on top of your bank's fee, so withdraw the daily maximum (usually ฿20,000–30,000) rather than little and often. Thai QR payments (PromptPay) need a Thai bank account, so ignore the stickers. Change money at SuperRich or a bank branch, never at the airport counters.

03

SIM and data

AIS and True (which absorbed dtac) sell tourist eSIMs online for €8–15 covering 8–15 days with generous data; buy before you fly so Grab works from the airport kerb. Airalo works but costs more for less. Coverage is excellent everywhere except deep in national parks. Thais live on LINE, not WhatsApp; hotels and tour operators will ask for it.

04

Plugs and power

220 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are hybrid and take flat US-style pins (types A and B), European two-pin (type C) and the Thai type O — so a European charger fits without an adapter and a British one needs one. Power cuts on islands are routine and short.
