Visa on arrival at Dili by air and sea
Most passports pay US$30 for a 30-day visa at Presidente Nicolau Lobato airport or the Dili port; EU and Schengen citizens enter visa-free for 90 days under a reciprocal agreement. The Indonesian land border at Mota'ain requires a visa application authorisation issued in advance.
US dollars in cash, small notes
The US dollar is the currency, with Timorese centavo coins for change. ATMs exist in Dili and a few district towns and often run empty; carry small bills for the districts, where cards are almost useless and $50 and $100 notes are hard to change.
Telkomcel or Timor Telecom SIM
Prepaid data is cheap and covers Dili, Baucau and the north coast; expect nothing on Atauro's west side, in the mountains or towards Tutuala. Download offline maps and tell your lodge when to expect you.
Types C, E, F and I, 220 V
Continental two-pin sockets dominate, with some Australian three-pin outlets in newer hotels; power cuts are routine outside Dili, so carry a battery pack.
