Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay: what to expect

The postcard. Ha Long proper is a procession of cruise boats in a bay with a litter problem; Lan Ha, immediately south around Cat Ba island, is the same karst with a quarter of the traffic and kayaking that does not feel like a queue. Do one night on a mid-range boat from Got pier and treat it as a rest day, not a highlight. This travel base guide groups the destination into six useful areas so the stay works on the ground, not only on a country map.

Travellers with 2 days (one night on the water)

That window gives Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay enough room for one anchor area and one contrasting cluster per day.

Quieter eastern water

Bái Tử Long and Cát Bà Town make that interest practical rather than a country-level promise.

Area-led planners

Six fixed clusters make it easier to choose a base and avoid repeated cross-destination transfers.

Maybe not for you: A compressed checklist is the weak version of Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay. Treat the suggested stay as time on the ground: weather, timed entry, ferries or mountain roads can remove half a day.

Season by season

When to visit Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay

October–March. Rounded monsoon-subtropical planning normals: a cooler dry season and a very wet, humid summer. Conditions can still change sharply by elevation, coast and exposure, so use the chart for route timing and the current forecast for the day itself.

  1. Cool dry

    November–February

    Best

Lower humidity and clearer days make walking and transport simplest.

  2. Hot build-up

    March–May

    Mixed

Heat and humidity rise before sustained rain arrives.

  3. Monsoon

    June–September

    Mixed

Heavy rain, heat and disruption require daily flexibility rather than cancellation by default.

  4. Transition

    October

    Good

Rain eases unevenly and landscapes remain intensely green.

Local food is more useful as an area decision than as a checklist of famous dishes.

Local tips for Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay

Plan the transfer, not only the distance

Treat the suggested stay as time on the ground: weather, timed entry, ferries or mountain roads can remove half a day.

01

Visa

UK, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish passports get 45 days visa-free (since 2023), and from August 2025 to August 2028 so do Dutch, Belgian, Luxembourg, Swiss, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Slovenian, Croatian, Romanian and Bulgarian ones. US, Canadian, Australian, Irish, Austrian, Portuguese and Greek citizens (and anyone wanting longer) apply for the 90-day e-visa at evisa.gov.vn — about €25 single entry, €45 multiple, three working days, and use only the official site. Phu Quoc alone is visa-free for 30 days for everyone arriving direct.

02

Money

Dong, about 30,000 ₫ to the euro. ATMs everywhere but most cap withdrawals at 2–5 million ₫ (€65–165) with a €1–2 fee; TPBank and VPBank machines allow more. Cards work in hotels, chains and better restaurants; the street is cash and QR codes tied to Vietnamese bank accounts you will not have. Bring some clean euro or dollar notes as a reserve — the gold shops on Hanoi's Ha Trung street change at better rates than banks.

03

SIM and data

Viettel has the best rural coverage; a tourist SIM with 4–5 GB a day for 30 days is €6–10 at the airport or any phone shop (passport now required for registration). An eSIM from Airalo or Ubigi is easier and slightly dearer. Hotel and café Wi-Fi is fast and universal. Apps: Grab and Xanh SM for rides, Vexere or 12Go for buses, Baolau or dsvn.vn for trains, Google Maps works fine.

04

Plugs and power

220 V, 50 Hz. Sockets are mostly the universal kind that accept flat two-pin (type A) and round two-pin (type C) plugs; European chargers go straight in, British ones need an adapter. Newer hotels also fit Schuko (type F).
